The Barossa is Australia’s most famous wine region. Thankfully, it has also been my home since 1980 where I have been fortunate to be amongst an amazing group of people here – winemakers, vignerons and of course friends.

Margret was my mother and this wine with its nashi pear, hints of stone fruits and zesty green apple is made in memory of my mum's home-made baked apple pie on a Sunday afternoon.

Margret Eden Valley Pinot Gris 2023 – Margret was Simon Adam’s mother and the zesty apple notes of her baked apple pie reminded Simon of the crisp apple notes in this wine. My grandmother also made a superb apple pie (of which I ate far too many), so I know exactly what he means. Margret did not have, as far as I am aware, anything to do with the discovery of Neptune (personally, star in the sky or star in the kitchen – I know where my vote goes). Very pale straw in colour, this is a refined style of Pinot Gris, exhibiting some elegance. Spices, citrus, grapefruit and pears, along with those crisp apple notes, this has good punch but never loses that elegance. Excellent persistence here. Enjoy this over the next four to five years. A really good Pinot Gris. I would say enjoy it with your best apple pie but that would be too easy and I suspect it would go better with fresh barramundi in any event. 92.
